Crawloween
(2025)
Welcome to Crawloween!
Crawloween is the 4th annual Halloween party hosted by Trung-Tin and Thien-An.
The idea of Crawloween is a further evolved version of a Nightmare Before Christmas themed party. In the Nightmare Before Christmas, Oggie Boogie, the main villain of the movie, had plans to take over Halloween and have a bug themed holiday called "Crawloween".
I wanted to turn his holiday into a reality and leaned into the bug theming.
Crawloween is the most ambitious event I have themed spatially. This party displays my portfolio of skills and how they all come together.
SPIDER
Fabrication for the party started mid June starting with the poster designed in Illustrator and Photoshop. Colors on the poster are incorporated throughout the party.
The center piece that framed the visuals and atmosphere of the party was the Spider throne. The Spider was the fist thing I worked on, and the last piece that was finished. I wanted the piece to be interactive and had the idea of being able to ride the spider. I used a 4 leg stool as the base structure. The spider was first 3D modeled in Blender taking inspiration from the puppeteered spider from Doja Cat's Scarlet Tour.
The head was 3D printed in 4 parts with registration pieces that locked the separate parts together. The head got a special mount that i modeled to fit on to an existing tripod base I had. The body and legs were unwrapped from the 3D model to create flat patterns. Patterns were then transferred to cardboard and hot glued together. To create a more smooth look, I applied one layer of paper mache to the exterior. Light sanding was done to the surface and then it got painted and air brushed.
BEETLE DOOR
The Beetle doorw was made to divide space within the party, create visual interest, and draw people into the area.
The Beetle was sketched in Illustrator to get the correct shape and size and transferred on to cardboard. A front and a back facade was made with spacers in between that matched the thickness of the walls. This way the door would sit flush and look like it belonged in the space. Craft paper was used for the intricate bug shapes and to hide the spacers in between the facade layers.
The door was then painted the same color and finish as the house walls to sell the illusion. The inside got a lilac color to make it pop.
chandelier
The chandelier was inspired by zoetrope sculptures. I wanted it to look like a cross section getting rotated around. The design had to incorporate a disco ball which I centered the piece around.
The look is meant to be very abstract and the final design was a surprise even to me since I only designed one of the cross sections. I drew the piece in illustrator and was able to calculate wire lengths and where to bend and attach pieces which made the process very quick and easy. The wires were cut to length and bent accordingly out of galvanized steel wire. Zip ties were used to secure the fames. The yellow disks were modeled in blender and 3D printed in PLA fillament.
I used yarn to crochet around the wire and brushed it out giving a fuzzy bug-like feel. The chandelier is held together with fishing line and zip ties which separate into a top piece and bottom piece sandwiching the disco ball in between.
A spot light and circle aura light were used to illuminate the piece really making the disco ball shine.
